Basic oil candle safety

We are committed to the safety of our products and their users. However, at the end of the day, you, the user of our products, are responsible to ensure that they are used in a safe way. By avoiding the common hazards associated with wax candles because they don’t burn down, don’t drip or throw burning cinders, oil candles  are one of the safest natural flame candles. However, they do have a real flame. Please read carefully and abide by the following:

  • Place your oil candle on a flat stable surface
  • Never leave burning candles unattended
  • Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep
  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that may be flammable
  • Keep burning candles away from curtains, furniture, bedding, carpets, books etc.
  • Keep candles out of reach of children and pets, small parts may be a choking hazard. Oil candles are not a toy.

What type of lamp oil should I use?

We recommend that you use sustainable plant based oils such as grape seed or coconut oil in your oil candles (available at most grocery stores). Heavy / thick oils such as olive oil do not work well, as they will only travel up the wick a short distance. However you can also use standard lamp & torch oil.

You can also use citronella oil as a natural insect repellent. You can burn scented oils, however you will not reap the benefits. The majority of the molecules transmitting the sent will be burnt off using this method. Instead use one of our oil candles to heat your favourite oil burner.

Do you use cotton or fiberglass wicks?

We use fiberglass wicks in our oil candles. Our reasoning for doing so is that they last much, much, longer saving you money and time by not having to constantly re-thread a new wick. We can provide replacement wicks at reasonable prices if necessary. Cotton is a very water intensive crop, glass can be recycled.

Can I dye my lamp oil?

Yes, you can dye your grape seed / coconut / lamp oil. We recommend using only food grade oil based dyes. Water based dyes will not mix with your oil. If you are unsure which type of dye you currently have, test 1 drop of dye in a very small amount of oil. It should readily mix and not separate.

What type of glass are your oil candles made from?

Our oil candles are made from borosilicate or soda lime depending on the style. Both types of glass will give you years of trouble free candle light if cared for as you would any other glass product.

How full should I fill my oil candle?

We recommend not to fill your oil candle more that 3/4 full. Never fill your oil candle to the point that oil is in the neck of the bottle.

How high should the wick be?

This is a personal choice. The higher the wick the larger the flame and the faster the oil will burn. Start with approximately 2mm and use long tweezers to pull through more wick to reach your desired flame height. If you are seeing smoke your wick is to high. Gently push the wick back down until you have a clean burning flame.
